World Coffee Day

October 1st is World Coffee Day.

Let's face it most people enjoy a nice cup of coffee first thing in the morning. For some it's that much needed jolt they need to get thier day off on the right footing. For others it's a nice treat on a cold autumn day.

Unless you have your own machine most of us do prefer an expertly made cup of coffee over a cup of instant.

Even I the lady who drinks Tea by the bucket load everyday can't deny the allure of a decent latte.

Plus coffee smells amazing it really is a feast for the senses.

The problem with our coffee obsession is that we go through an estimated 22,000 disposable cups every hour in Ireland. I shit you not, even I was shocked by that figure.

Sure it's no big deal right? They can be recycled?

Well channeling my inner Dwight Shrute/Recyclatron I'm going to have to say "FALSE", they often can't or don't get recycled because they are made up of mixed materials paper, plastic, card and are virtually impossible to recycle.

What about Compostables?

Well it is a better option but often they need to be put through an industrial composter to break down properly so you would need to put them in a compost bin and not a general waste bin.

We've heard the problems, where's the solutions.

1. Have your coffee in a standard cup by sitting in if time permits you to.

2. Bring your own Travel/Keep Cup. Many Coffee shops now offer a small discount or rewards for customers who bring thier own cup.
